El Paso street signs tell great stories. Hawkins was named for the Hawkins Family, owners of Hawkins Dairy, Morehead after the pioneer banker who established State National Bank in 1881, and Ange, angel in French, the wife of Dr. J.A. McKinney, a prominent citizen of the 1880’s. One of the newest streets in our community is Elsa Maldonado Lane. Her story is inspiring.

There have been many angels through the years who have supported West Texas parishes through their generosity and service, some of whom are no longer with us. As we celebrate twenty years of the Catholic Foundation, we remember and give thanks.

The Catholic Foundation congratulates Catholic Legacy Fund Assistant, Alyssa Salazar, on being selected as a recipient of Catholic Extension’s Young Adult Leadership Initiative (YALI) scholarship. Alyssa was accepted to the University of Notre Dame Graduate School and begins her studies this summer.

Fr. Trinidad Fuentez, Rector of St. Patrick Cathedral in downtown El Paso, passed away on May 4, 2021 at the age of 69. He had a great love for our Blessed Mother and was a dedicated priest. Fr. Trini was born in Pecos, Texas, on January 10, 1952 to Daniel and Joaquina Fuentez. He was one of 15 children.

Pastors and volunteer lay leaders attended a virtual 2021 kick-off on March 31. Established in 1983, Progress, the Catholic Ministry Appeal, provides funding for the 15 ministries in the 10 counties of the Diocese of El Paso. The kick-off celebration assists Progress leaders with the resources needed to launch the annual event.

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations launched the #forSafeWorship campaign to safeguard religious sites around the world, regardless of their faith, culture and history, in order to increase acceptance and respect among human beings and build bridges of mutual understanding and cooperation. Bishop Mark Seitz will ordain five men to the Sacred Order of the Diaconate on Friday, April 16 at 6:30pm at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. The Diocese of El Paso will be livestreaming the Ordination Mass on the diocesan Facebook page.
